comments on the java Chinese talking dict.

I purchased the java Chinese talking dictionary for 49.99 for use on Nokia5800.

The interface is far too basic for modern smartphone use.

1. the low-res icon looks horrible on my phone.
2. you cannot scroll through the lookup menu without tapping 'elevator' arrows
3. when a search result is displayed, the chinese hanzi, speaker icon, and phonetic pronunciation are miniscule to read properly and there is a massive amount of wasted bluespace on the screen.
4. search results do not default showing pinyin
5. the intro splash screen is pretty bland

Overall, the java version of this program is useful but very ugly.

Its time the java version got a facelift--because it's not good enough for the price.

complaints

How come there is no iphone forum ?

My bug report is that when I switch apps away from Larousse English Italian ($20 app) to check on something and come back, the application has reverted to input for English->Italian rather than staying in the mode that it was in.
2. I can't tell which way the translator is going because there is no header showing the current translation mode, so I have to start typing a word and when the search as you type starts showing it's lookup results and I can tell that they are in the wrong language.
I thought I'd post here before writing a review.
thanks

Changing from Windows Mobile to iPhone

I have previously purchased a Chinese dictionary and phrase book for a windows mobile device. I no longer have the windows mobile device and now use iPhone. Do you have any way to allow me to re-use these applications on iPhone or is it necessary to re-purchase them?

Font size / character entry method

Hi, I'm trying out the dictionary on my E90 and it's very good. The text is very small however and is there a way to enlarge the font? Also, as others have asked will there ever be character entry that doesn't depend on pinyin? For example, searching by the number of strokes and/or the radical (bushou). I don't know the pinyin of many mandarin words and this greatly hinders the Chinese-English portion of the software.

In addition, like someone wrote a while ago, having the option to have "pinyin" on all the time would be very nice. The Nokia (Java) version can't do this yet.

Thanks!

Major issues with Pinyin e-dictionary input for iPhone!

One of the major features your website promotes for the Chinese E-dictionary is the ability to input pinyin to locate a Chinese word. However, this is highly misleading when based on my experience it only has the ability to actually find the correct Chinese character for perhaps one out of every three words you input using Pinyin.

Moreover, it would just make common sense that the more of the pinyin word you input, then the more the E-dictionary should be able to narrow the choices to find the right Chinese character, however, this is not the case either.

By way of example, the following is a summary of the significant and extremely frustrating issues I have experienced in trying to input the pinyin equivalent of the English word "Green".

First, I can locate the various Chinese words and characters for word Green by using the English text input. Accordingly, when I do so I come up with about 8-9 various meanings and usages of this word.

The particular pinyin equivalent for the English word Green that my Chinese instructor is asking me to learn is also the first meaning of the word that the E-dictionary displays, which is: “lü sè”. Accordingly, I added this word to the Study feature in English for review.

Given that I want to also simultaneously study and learn the Chinese character for the word Green I also wanted to locate the Chinese character for the word Green and add that to the Study feature as well.

Thus, given the E-dictionary is marketed to accept pinyin input, I thought this would be no problem and thus I proceeded back to the main menu and use the language toggle feature to switch from finding English text to finding Chinese character text and accordingly began to input the pinyin
text “lü sè”.

When I typed the pinyin word “l” the E-dictionary immediately gave me possible options for the correct Chinese character, which I thought would logically progressively narrow down the choices to the correct Chinese character the more of the pinyin word that I input. However, instead when I added the pinyin text “ü” the E-dictionary did not offer any additional choices beyond the vast number of choices it had already located for the pinyin text “l”, which was perhaps 30+ different choices.

Nevertheless, I proceeded to slowly and meticulously evaluate each possible character option generated to find the right Chinese character the E-dictionary had provided for the word Green. However, after searching for about fifteen to twenty minutes through each option NONE of the listed options were correct!

At this point, I believed that perhaps I could locate another of the alternative pinyin Chinese meanings of the word Green that E-dictionary had provided (i.e. that had already found by searching in English and which I believe was the pinyin text and alternative meaning “liǎn sè”), which was even more frustrating in that I was able to actually locate the correct character for the alternative meaning (again after painstakingly reviewing at least 15-20 choices), but when I clicked on the correct character the E-dictionary did not display the meaning of the character as it should have, but rather it did nothing!

That is E-dictionary should have opended and displayed a new page for the meaning of the character once I clicked on it, however, instead the choices listed below the character I had chosen remained at what is the first character in the Chinese version of the E-dictionary, which is “-“ or “yĪ” and generally the Chinese meaning for the English word “One”.

Other issues I encountered during this process is that I would click a possible option from the list, which would then simply result in E-dictionary replacing the second letter of the pinyin word with a Chinese character, but leaving the initial text of the pinyin intact to create a mixed Chinese Pinyin/Character word that obviously the E-dictionary would not find the meaning for either.

Using Pinyin I was able to actually locate in the E-dictionary the Chinese correct characters and meanings for the English words "feet", "ear", "blue" and "black", respectively defined by E-dictionary in pinyin as: “chĭ”, “ĕr duŏ”, “lán sè” and “hēi sè”, but again I quickly found out that E-dictionary having the ability to find the correct Chinese character using pinyin input is the exception rather than the norm.

To the extent I was able to add to the Study feature both the English version of the word and the Chinese character was tremendously valuable given that the Review/Playback Study feature of E-dictionary is a wonderful tool in that it allowed me to quickly and efficiently learn not only the Pinyin meaning for the word, but I was also able to memorize the actual traditional Chinese character meaning for the word.

If you believe I am doing something wrong or otherwise can provide advice on how to resolve my above described issues, then please advise because E-dictionary is a wonderful tool for learning Chinese if it works as advertised, but thus far it
has significantly failed to perform.

Thanks,
iPhone Study Feature and the ability to add to study a word in its English and Chinese form?

Hello,

I have version 1.01 for the iPhone and want to knwo if its possible to add to the study the English and Chinese version of a particular word?

I know of course that when you click on the English version you can see the Chinese Character for the word, but the character is so small it barely legible.

Thefore, it would be nice to be able to look up a word in English add it to the study in both its English and Chinese character form.

Thanks,

Why is there no forum category for iphone?

Does the application work when not connected to the internet? I assume it is, but I did not see it listed anywhere.

Thanks,
